The Visitor Returns

Published June 5, 2013 by lowercase v

hallo!
Today, I saw  Lulu, the neighbour’s Jack Russell ,  jumping up and down next to the fence. I didn’t think she’d get over it so I continued with whatever I was doing.

Next thing I knew, Lulu was chilling in our back yard. I went outside again with the view of helping her get home. Despite letting me pet her on Monday after she and Gabi made friends, Lulu still wouldn’t let me near her.

Gabi came out to play with her and I watched them for a while. They seemed to be having tons of fun. I then tried helping Lulu home as she still didn’t seem like she could go back from this side.  She still wouldn’t let me pick it up.

I decided to have lunch and Gabi came in with me. After lunch I went to check on Luna and to see if she could go home. She was gone. I checked the neighbours’ yard and she was back home. I have no idea how she got back home.  Little trouble maker this one. Not only was she not wearing a tag today, she wasn’t wearing a collar. I hope she’s micro chipped.

Not Over Yet…

Today is 21 December 2012
It’s the summer solstice (In the Southern Hemisphere where we live) and thus the longest day of the year.
Gabi was going to have a bath today, but it’s rainy, so we’ll have to postpone it until tomorrow or Monday.

Week past:

On Tuesday there was a terrible thunderstorm and hail stones hit my car as I waited outside the vet’s to buy dewormer for Gabi. I put the white tablet in some boerewors (ground beef sausage) and she wolfed it up. She was dewormed. She also left muddy paw prints over my clean duvet cover. During the course of the afternoon the power went our and only came back on around 9pm. Gabi was freaked out by the humans moving and plotting and huddling (to see photos on a tablet) in the dark. I didn’t get around to blogging. I had Indian take-aways for dinner, which was quite nice.

On Wednesday the power went out at around 7pm, luckily just after dinner. I had a drink while trying to get on to my Facebook from my cellphone (had to reset the password) and I knocked over the glass while trying to write down a code by candle light. The glass shattered on the floor, very close to Gabi’s bed. She ran to the lounge and I was worried about shards of glass and her paws, but luckily she didn’t yelp and her paws seemed fine. I cleaned up the mess and pieces of glass by candle light, this is not easy to do. The power came back on before midnight.

Yesterday we got some litchis and Gabi seemed to want some, so we gave her a piece and although chewing it was a bit awkward, she seemed to love it.

Last Saturday:

Chance  doggy friends in park

We had a play-date with some doggy friends and their human moms. It was a nice sunny summer’s day. It took Gabi a while to get used to them again. But she was more relaxed around them than in the past. Chance (a playful mixed breed boy) and his mom, rode with us in the car to the park in Johannesburg. When the first wanted to get into the car, Gabi was a bit aggressive so the sat in the back and Gabi sat in the friend. However on the way home Gabi was exhausted and must’ve remembered that they were our friends, she and Chance were in the back and his mom sat in the front. I hope that next yearwe get to see our friends more often.

To all our friends in the Northern Hemisphere were it is now winter solstice, were hope that you and your pets are all warm and safe on the longest night.

Nervous/ Excited.

I have been sleeping on an air mattress for the past week, since my grandmother is visiting until next weekend, and she is sleeping in my bed.  I don’t mind at all, though it is a tad annoying that the mattress needs to be re-inflated every few days. Gabi loves it! My “bed” is now right next to hers on the floor. It makes it much easier to crawl in right next to me or to roll on the fleece blanket.

ON FRIDAY Gabi and I went to visit my friends J & E.  I was already on my way when J let me know that she had to pick up E and was running late. I decided to take Gabi to a park close to their home to pass the time. While I was busy at the car, getting out a treat for Gabi and putting away my camera (dead battery- meaning I had to take lame pics on my phone for the rest of the day) some excited dogs came up to the fence  and barked at Gabi. She jumped right into the boot of my car (trunk).

It was a nice visit. It was Gabi’s first meeting with their dog Violet, a 8-year old mixed breed, who like Gabi, has also had some bad experiences with other dogs. At first they were quite snappy with each other, but after some time they smelled each other’s butts and made friends. Soon they were running around together barking at the same noises and peeing in the same spots.

There was however a snag when if came to Lily, the cat. Lily usually hides when guests visits, but she always comes down stairs to say hello to me. Gabi was sitting on my lap when the kitty came to greet me. At first she seemed excited but well-behaved. When I stroked Lily’s head to say hello, Gabi started barking. The cat ran off to the top of the stairs and Gabi ran after her, thinking it’s a game of chase. She stood halfway up the stairs incessantly barking, which started to freak little out.  E took the cat upstairs while J and I hung out outside with the dogs.

Whenever Gabi caught glimpse f the cat she was completely obsessed with her. I had to put her on her leash several times. Not that long after dinner I took my dog-child home so that the poor kitty could recover.  J and decided to rather take the dogs to the park next time.

On Sunday (today) morning Gabi went with me and my parents and gran to my brother’s for coffee. She was well behaved.

In the afternoon we went to a park to meet up with our regular pack of doggy friends. I left home 5 minutes later than planned and ended up driving for ages, because the friends were using a different entrance (it’s a huge park). I was quite late and Gabi seemed nervous of the other dogs from the get go. She seemed to have forgotten the other doggies in our group or maybe she just wasn’t feeling social. It was also a bit cool and I didn’t pack a sweater for her. She sat on my lap most of the time.

I had some dog biscuits for the pack. One of the dogs loves getting treats (and can get a bit aggressive about them) and even after getting her treat she was standing there right in front of me. I was holding a biscuit for one of the dogs who was playing with his ball and looked away for the little girl in front of me (and Gabi on my lap). The next thing I knew she was coming at us and probably snapped at  Gabi. I rolled back trying cover Gabi best I could, hurting my wrist in the process. The other dog’s mom called her off and took her and her sister for a walk. Gabi wasn’t injured and probably had a fright. When the dog, who really is a beautiful and lovely girl, came back she  gently up to me. Almost as if to say she was sorry.  We put some rescue drops (homeopathic sedative) on Gabi’s ears and I took her on a walk, which seemed to help.

It was a rather eventful weekend and Gabi sleeping it off.

Field Trip

We had a really good walk at the spruitjie (small stream/creek) today. Gabi “ran” off-leash, but stayed close most of the time. If she heard my footsteps stop, she would usually stop and look back at me. There we no big scary dogs to make her jump into my arms. She even sniffed two Dachshunds, to make friends.

Gabi and I went to the park in Emmarentia with some friends today. She was scared at first and even jumped up in to my arms, but as she came to see that this was a pretty harmless pack.

Later on she even sniffed a few bums, but was not quite ready quite ready to play. Most of the time she stuck close to me. We had quite an array of dogs: A male Bull-terrier (Seun), A Collie-mix (Chance), a Cocker Spaniel (Ziva), A Golden Retriever (Anja) and her sister the Springer Spaniel (Emily). Most of the others had a swim but Gabi made sure she stayed away from the water.

When she felt more confident she even had a little trot. She was exhausted when we left and probably slept for most of the car ride. I’m sure next time she sees her new friends she might just play with them!
